Land of the Dead

Land of the DeadJust about anyone that’s ever seen a film is familiar with his work. He single-handedly created an entire sub-genre, and he’s been recognized as a revolutionary film maker. No, I’m not talking about Stephen Spielberg, I’m talking about George Romero.

Getting his start creating commercials for light-hearted companies such as Calgon, George Romero changed the film world when he and his friends formed Image Ten Productions in the late 1960’s and each chipped in $10,000 to create their first feature film, Night of the Living Dead. The film has since become an icon of not only horror films, but all genres.

Being a horror fan back in the day I was very familiar with George’s work. My favorite type of horror movies just happens to be zombie movies so to me he was the end-all in horror directors. I grew up watching his films, Dawn of the Dead and Day of the Dead, and even though there were always rumors of George’s next zombie film proof never materialized and the rumored film never surfaced. Well, you can imagine my surprise when George started showing up on the horror radar again and rumors of his next zombie film were buzzing, and this time he was confirming. The name of the film wasn’t nailed down then, but after the buzz died down George finally annouced that the film would be called Land of the Dead.

Just this last week I got a chance to see the film and while it didn’t blow my socks off, it was George through and through. One thing that I tried to avoid before seeing this movie was forming expectations. Yes, this is George Romero, but it has also been more than 20 years since the last "Dead" movie was released. Could he still pull it off, could he still produce a movie that outshines it’s brothers and sisters in horror? These were the questions I had. In many ways I guess I wanted him to prove to the world that he still had it.

I walked into the theatre with my bag of Rieces Pieces, sat down and waited impatiently through the barage of trailers, 20 it seemed, then the movie began. The credits hinted at something different from horror movies of late. Then the first images come on screen. We’re shown an empty world that shows no sign of life, a park that rather than being filled with families is filled with standing (though barely-moving), rotted corpses. The world has been infested with the zombies for many years and has since gotten used to having them there. It’s no longer a fight for survival, but rather a fight for a better quality of life.

In general I really liked this film. It doesn’t have quite the atmosphere that the other films have and there are some writing issues that I don’t quite understand. There are several times when there’s some interplay between cast members that doesn’t make sense, like one cast member winking to another for no reason. There are also some technical issues with the film, odd scene endings are just one example.

Perhaps one of the most dissapointing things about the film was the performance of the actor playing the lead zombie "Big Daddy". Dispite the fact that he was playing the leader of the zombies and was showing signs of learning basic reasoning skills, he was a little too responsive and coherent during most of the film. He just didn’t seem like a very good zombie to me at all.

So, should you see this movie? Maybe, depending on whether or not you typically like this genre of film. However, if you’re looking for the next Gone with the Wind, you might want to check out something else.

Headed out

With Kristen and I leaving tomorrow morning for Florida I’m finding myself getting more and more excited. It’s not so much being in Florida that’s exciting as much as it is just the excitement of a long road trip though I have to admit that I’m really looking forward to spending some time on the beach.

We don’t have a lot planned in the way of events, but we do plan on spending some time in the pool, on the beach and hopefully on the driving range. Kristen is really excited and I think most of her excitement is centered on being in the pool. I was very excited to find out that there’s a weight room in the condo where we’re staying so I’ll be able to keep up my workout routine while we’re there, which is something that I was worried about.

The place we’re staying at is a country club I believe and it sits right on a golf course. I doubt that I’ll play a round considering I don’t even have my own clubs, but I’d like to get to the driving range and Kristen is interested as well.

Aside from relaxing I’m hoping to take in some good restaurants too. I don’t think you can have a great vacation without having some great food. It’s just not as fun to eat in your room all of the time, I’d much rather be out trying different restaurants.

I’ll be taking my camera and I’m sure that I’ll get a lot of pictures and I’m sure that you’ll see some here. Hopefully they’ll all turn out okay.

A unique opportunity

I received a call this weekend from a friend from high school that I don’t get to talk to very often. He’s in school to become a band director and he’s working with Centerville High School’s drum line this summer to get them ready for their competitions. He’s a little short-handed and wanted to know if I could help him out with the drum line for a couple of days this week.

This is the same drum line that he and I spent 4 great years performing with and generally devoting our lives to. When we were in high school this was a very important thing to us. We spent all of the school year, not just the summers, leading the drum line and trying to make it a fun and rewarding group to belong to. I was a section leader and was very proud to be considered the leader of one of the top 5 drum lines in the state.

Being the section leader for that section many times meant getting a look behind-the-scenes during staff meetings and other similar situations that most band members were not allowed to be present for. As a result I felt like this was "my" drumline eventhough it was just a group of my peers and the only reason I was the section leader was because I had gone to state competitions a couple of times. In short I was just a little more experienced than most of the other percussionists.

If you really boil down what it was that I loved so much about band it comes down to this: I just wasn’t very good at anything else and in band I was one of the best. As sad as it sounds I was considered a "drugged out loser" by many of the teachers and even some of my classmates. I didn’t do well in my classes and barely did enough to scrape by and graduate. But in band, though many people would think that it was easy to get an "A" in that class, I worked very hard and strived to be the best percussionist in any high school. Who’s to say whether or not I got very close, but I felt like I did and isn’t that what really matters?

4th of July Weekend

If there’s one thing I love more than the weekend it’s a 3-day weekend. It’s nice to really be able to get some rest in and spend time with family and friends in the process. This weekend, as if it were avoidable, was 4th of July weekend and for the U.S. that means the celebration of Independance day. Typically this means hamburgers, hot dogs and trying not to blow off your hand with fireworks. I was party to all three of these, and while I was very safe when it came to the fireworks (since my career depends on the presence of at least a couple of fingers) I had more than my fare share of hot dogs and burgers.

Friday night was the time and most of east-central Indiana was the setting for one of the worst storms that I’ve ever seen. We were at Kristen’s parents house and planning on watching a movie. However, once the whether stirred up and the power went out we knew that our plans were going to change. We instead ended up bailing water from a neighbors basement.

Kristen’s parents live across the street from an older couple that we attend church with. Their basement has a history of filling up with water whenever the power goes out and there are heavy rains. They always do their best to keep things under control, but with the man having not-so-good knees they’re not able to keep on top of the water. So when the weather kicked up we knew that we were going to have to go over and help them out. IÂ won’t go into a long drawn out story, but let’s just say that we carried 5-gallon buckets of water up the stairs while we waited on the power to come back on. That lasted most of Friday night…

Saturday was a pretty nice day. Kristen and I slept in to try and get some rest after a hectic Friday night. We were supposed to be going over to Kristen’s parents house that night for a cookout and Kristen was going to be making a couple of dishes for that. She spent most of the day working on those and I spent most of my time getting some work done on the computer. Once that was all done we went over there for a campfire and a cookout.

Sunday was fairly typical, we went to church in the morning but then we went out to lunch with the youth pastor to talk about some ways that we might be able to help him. Once that was over we had to get back home so Kristen could prepare a dish for the cookout we were going to at my mom’s house.

We had a good time at the cookout, there were several lawn games that we played but we mostly sat around and talked with everyone. It wasn’t too hot, so we had a good time. Once that was over we headed over to another cookout so that Kristen could visit some family that was in from out of town. We had a great time there as well. That’s where we set off lots of fireworks.

Monday turned out to be a not-so-exciting day. I had already contemplated coming into work even though we were closed for the day. I had some stuff that I could get started on and since we’re leaving for vacation next week I thought I would use it for a chance to get some things done. In the end I decided to go ahead and take the time to relax and Kristen and I planned a trip to the movies. What happened at the movies wasn’t so exciting, we saw The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy. All that I will say is that we left in the middle of it, which is something I don’t usually do. It was absolutely horrible. The rest of the day was spent playing the GameCube and sitting around the house with Kristen and her brother.

In general this weekend was pretty fun and relaxing, exactly what I needed.

Getting ready for Florida

With only one week left until Kristen and I hit the road for Florida, we’re getting very excited and can almost taste the ocean air. Though we’re there for a wedding, we’re really hoping to turn it into a vacation as well. With visits to the beach and hopefully other fun activities planned, we’re looking forward to this very much. We’ll be leaving on Tuesday the 12th of July early in the day and returning Wednesday the 20th.

I’m planning on taking my digital camera and I’ll have lots of photos posted here as soon as we return.
