Man I love fall

Wednesday, September 29, 2004

I walked out this morning for work and realized something. It’s fall. The slightly chilly air, the colored leaves, the hint of winter to come. I love it so much, it’s my favorite time of year. I’m not sure what it is about fall, but something in it evokes many wonderful memories for me.

I remember trick or treating when I was little, mad because my mom made me wear my coat over my costume (dracula would NEVER wear a bulky coat over his cape!). I remember a date to the orchard with Kristen right after we first started dating and the excitement that came along with having someone to spend time with. I remember lots of things.

Two or three years ago this time of year would have given me desires to drag out all of my favorite horror movies and watch them all, soaking in the wonderful atmosphere from each. Now, I find myself with a different desire. A desire to make the most of it before winter gets here and the beautiful leaves are gone. I want to take trips to the orchard several times a week, but I know it’s not necessary.

I’ve recently felt the urge to visit Maine again, a feeling that used to be pretty constant. Though usually it was conjured up by movies based on Stephen King’s books. Now, I want to experience this weather and this beauty all of the time, and I don’t care much about the “spooky” atmosphere that fall used to conjure up for me.

An intersting find

Wednesday, September 22, 2004

One of the websites that I visit quite often is Slashdot. Today the have a story posted about an article from the 50s that included a photo of what scientists THEN believed a home computer could look like in the year 2004. It’s quite amazing. Click the image below to see a larger version as well as the caption that goes along with the photo.

The caption says: Scientists from the RAND Corporation have created this model to illustrate how a “home computer” could look in th eyear 2004. However, the needed technology will not be economically feasible for the average home. Also the scientists readily admit that the comptuer will require not yet invented technology to actually work, but 50 years from now scientific progress is expected to solve these problems. With teletype interface and the Fortran language, the computer will be easy to use and only [cuts off].

I find it amazing and exciting to think that scientists of today that make predictions about future products may be way off. Maybe things will be very interesting in 50 years. Maybe we’ll have new products that are nothing like what we have now. Maybe we’ll become innovative again.

Just thought that was interesting…

Finally

Tuesday, September 21, 2004

My stomach problems are gone and things are back to normal. I couldn’t be much happier. Now, if only I could find a way to make my grass stop growing and always look beautiful. Oh well, another day.

I’ve been doing more computer technical support for friends lately and it’s made me ever more confident that there are much better options out there than PCs. It’s amazing that people are willing to put up with Windows and the slew of problems that come along with it JUST BECAUSE that’s what everyone else is using. Do some research people, come on… You can get any apps that you want, they will work better, and you’ll enjoy using those programs more. AND IT’S EASIER TO USE!!!!! It should be a no-brainer. But it isn’t. And that burns me up.

Here’s how I think of it: It’s like going up to someone and having this conversation…

Jerry: “Hey Bob, did you know that you can have everything you want absolutely free?”
Bob: “No, I didn’t but thanks anyway, I’d rather have nothing at all than something.”

WHY!!!! Don’t tell me cost, because you can get a Mac for about the same price as a PC. Don’t tell me software, already covered that one… Basically don’t tell me anything, because I already know you’re wrong. Case closed. :)

Stomach Virus

Friday, September 17, 2004

Man has this week sucked…

I’ve had a stomach virus that has produced, by far, some of the worst pain I’ve ever experienced. Here are a few highlights:

1.) Clockwork-like, piercing stomach cramps every 15 minutes
2.) Zero sleep because of item number 1 (see above)
3.) Serious regret for eating banana peppers on my sub from Subway

Each of the items above has had a crucial role in my week. A delicate symphony of distruction. :) I would do ANYTHING to get rid of it.

I went home early on Monday, but other then that I’ve kept a regular work schedule, which hasn’t been difficult until today. I didn’t sleep at ALL last night because the cramps were so bad. Kristen has had the same problems and has had it a little worse than I have. I’ve always had a pretty tough immune system though. That’s how I know this is bad.

I’m really hoping to get over this soon so I can get back to a normal life. If I weren’t so mad about my sitution I would probably post a picture of the distressed look that comes upon my face every time I feel a cramp coming on. It’s not pretty.

Strange dream

Tuesday, September 14, 2004

I usually have two types of dreams. One type is the kind that makes me feel like it’s symbolic of something happening in my life. The other is the kind I enjoy, the kind that entertains you with a situation or scenario that is beyond belief only to cover you with a cloud of dissapointment as you realize that it was only a dream. I had a dream of the second variety last night…

I was sitting in my car to leave the house on a chilly fall day. It was raining pretty hard outside and I could hardly see out of my car window. I looked up and here came this large, red monster-type truck peeling out in front of me. I looked at the truck and happened to notice that the driver was amazing guitarist Steve Vai. I was pretty excited (being a big fan of his) so I motioned for him to stop.

He pulled over and rolled down his window and I asked him if he’d be willing to come into my house and sign some of my Steve Vai-related items. He walked into my house.

I quickly grabbed my guitars (one of them being Steve Vai’s $2,500 signature model mind you) and quickly got him to sign all of them. Then, as he was looking around he say how many of his cds, movies and other items that I owned and was impressed. Anyway, after hanging out for an hour or so I walked into the other room to find all sorts of guitars and other guitar player dream items. I looked back to thank Steve, but he was gone. I walked out onto the porch to see if he was out there but he was already gone. But he left me another guitar outside. :)

Then, out in the distance I see my dad walking towards my house. For some reason he had taken a plane from Arizona and the plane landed at the high school right next to my house. I told him about what had happed and he was pretty amazed.

What a weird dream…
